The Signal
Geothermal is having a moment, and the fervor for firm power is showing up in the numbers. Four major fundraises and a landmark IPO landed in the past few weeks alone, all driven by the same force: AI infrastructure needs 24/7 power faster than the grid can interconnect it. The proof point arrived in May, when Fervo Energy’s IPO raised roughly $1.9B raised on Nasdaq (FRVO), with the market cap surging past $10B on day one. That listing was preceded by a $462M Series E in December that included an equity check from Google, on top of a 115 MW power-purchase deal supplying Google’s Nevada data centers.
The capital is now moving upstream. Quaise Energy raised $134M in the first close of a Series B (total funding: $230M) to drill superhot rock for a 250 MW plant near Oregon’s Newberry Volcano. It has already signed an undisclosed hyperscaler as anchor customer for the first 50 MW. Endurance Energy, founded by an ex-SpaceX engineer, raised $54M in a Founders Fund-led Series A to tap subsea volcanic heat. Critical Energy raised $22M to fix the bottleneck around geothermal-specific turbines, built the way its SpaceX-alum founder used to build rocket engines. And Hephae Energy closed a $17.8M Series A to commercialize ultra-high-temperature drilling robotics.
What’s worth noting here is who’s writing the checks. Google took equity in Fervo’s last round, and Quaise’s undisclosed hyperscaler customer is effectively underwriting a first-of-its-kind plant before it’s built. Offtake agreements are turning into balance-sheet bets, and when the buyer brings its own capacity and its own capital, geothermal’s chicken-and-egg financing problem gets a lot easier to solve.
We put this dynamic to Mike Matson, co-founder and CEO of Birch Geothermal, on this week’s Dynamo Show. His take: geothermal is moving from a rounding error in the US power mix (~4 GW today) to a real firm-power wedge, driven not by a green premium but by speed to power. Give it a listen, and if you’re building in the space, reach out.

Toyota To Spend $3.6B Moving Tacoma Production From Mexico To US
Toyota will double the size of its San Antonio assembly plant and add 2,000 jobs to bring Tacoma truck production stateside from Mexico. The move puts $3.6B behind the reshoring narrative at a moment when most manufacturers are still hedging between domestic and offshore. It also puts pressure on every other OEM running border-adjacent production to show their hand.
US Truckload Spot Rates Surpass COVID-19 Highs Under Supply Pressure
National dry van spot rates have climbed past the peaks set during pandemic-era disruption, but the driver this time is supply contraction, not a demand boom. Ton-mile volumes remain flat while carrier exits have thinned capacity. What demand growth exists is concentrated in AI infrastructure buildouts, not broad economic expansion.
Semiconductor Worker Shortfall Endangers US Chip Factory Revival
A nationwide shortage of high-skilled workers threatens to delay construction of billions of dollars in new semiconductor plants across the US. The constraint is not capital or policy. It is the physical workforce required to build and operate fabs at scale, and the pipeline to produce those workers does not exist yet.
Volkswagen Cuts Global Model Lineup By 50% And Restructures Factory Footprint
Volkswagen’s executive board is eliminating up to half its global model lineup and reducing offering complexity by 75%. The restructuring signals that the era of broad-portfolio automaking is ending. Overcapacity and margin compression are forcing the world’s largest automaker to shrink its way back to profitability.
Shein Wins Chinese Approval For Hong Kong IPO At $40-50B Valuation
Shein secured Chinese regulatory approval for a Hong Kong listing after failed attempts in the US and London. The valuation has dropped from a $100B peak to $40-50B, reflecting both geopolitical friction and regulatory risk. The fast-fashion supply chain giant’s pivot to Hong Kong underscores how cross-border commerce businesses are getting squeezed between jurisdictions.

Hephae Energy Raises $17.8M Series A For Hot Rock Geothermal Drilling
Hephae Energy Technology closed a $17.8M Series A co-led by Susquehanna Sustainable Investments and Underground Ventures to scale robotic drilling technology for high-temperature geothermal. Two geothermal drilling startups raising in the same week signals that the energy transition’s subsurface bottleneck is attracting real capital.
Auger Raises $50M For Supply Chain Platform Led By Ex-Amazon Operations Chief
Auger, the supply chain technology startup founded by former Amazon consumer CEO Dave Clark, raised $50M and landed its first major enterprise customers. Clark’s bet is that the operational infrastructure Amazon built internally can be productized for the rest of the market. The round validates that enterprise supply chain orchestration is a venture-scale category.
Quaise Energy Raises $134M Series B First Close For Superhot Geothermal
Quaise Energy closed the first tranche of its Series B at $134M, led by Prelude Ventures with participation from JERA and Idemitsu Kosan, bringing total funding to $230M. The company is building the world’s first superhot geothermal power plant in Oregon using microwave-based deep drilling. Geothermal went from conference curiosity to a nine-figure fundraising category in under two years.

DEUTZ Acquires FFG Flensburger For ~€1.6B In Defense Pivot
German engine maker DEUTZ will acquire FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau, a military vehicle manufacturer, for approximately €1.6B. The deal transforms DEUTZ from a powertrain supplier into a European defense systems provider owning both propulsion and platform. European defense spending is remaking the industrial landscape, and the buyers are moving faster than the startups.
Assent Acquires iPoint To Consolidate Supply Chain Compliance
Blackstone and Vista-backed Assent acquired German auto compliance specialist iPoint to build an end-to-end supply chain sustainability platform. Product compliance and lifecycle reporting have shifted from nice-to-have to regulatory mandate for automakers. The deal signals that compliance infrastructure is consolidating before the rules are even finalized.
Descartes Acquires Chilean Last-Mile Routing Firm Drivin For $30M
Descartes Systems acquired Chilean last-mile routing and scheduling provider Drivin for $30M, extending its logistics technology footprint into Latin America. The deal adds regional routing intelligence that cannot be replicated from outside the market. Last-mile optimization is now a global land grab.
